7 Natural Ways to Detox

Our bodies are very complex consisting of many systems that work together. When we encounter environmental pollutants and exposed to toxins both in our food from cancer-causing chemicals, preservatives, and pesticides, and in our homes, our body’s natural method of removing toxins might need additional support.

The body naturally removes toxins and heavy metals through our liver, kidneys, intestines, lymphatic system, and through our largest organ, the skin. By implementing some or all of the following suggestions, you can help support your body and give it the detoxifying boost it may need.

  1. Drink Water. We cannot express how important it is to get your daily hydration in! Starting the day with an 8 oz glass of room temperature water with 1/2 – 1 whole lemon squeezed will help boost your metabolism, aid in digestion and weight-loss, and alkaline the body. Throughout the day, be sure to carry a large tumbler to have access to plenty of water. We suggest drinking 50% to 70% of your body weight in ounces of water daily, depending on your coffee, soda, and alcohol intake. That means, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should consume 75 – 105 ounces of water a day.
  2. Drink Celery Juice. We love drinking celery juice first thing in the morning after our lemon water to further help our bodies with hydration. Celery juice has many benefits including decreasing bloat, improving digestion, flushing out toxins in our liver and body, relaxing our nervous system, clearing up skin issues, and aiding in weight-loss. Jessica’s favorite brand, if you don’t want to make your own, is Veggie Juices made by a local Kingwood mom.
  3. Dry Brushing. Dry brushing is known to stimulate the lymphatic system and improve circulation by stimulating the flow of the lymphatic fluid. Start with your feet, brushing in small soft stroked up your body. Your torso, hands, arms, and shoulders working your way towards your heart. By dry brushing, you are moving the lymphatic fluid that collects the toxins our cells produce and helps transport them to the blood so they can then be eliminated. Dry brushing also helps minimize the appearance of cellulite, exfoliates dead skin cells, and helps to open our pores to further detox when sweating. Be sure to hop in the shower after to rinse off the dead skin cells.
  4. Foam Rolling & Rebounding. It’s no surprise that we love our Rebound & Align class at Vessel Pilates because of it’s amazing benefits to our health. By rolling out your connective tissue (a.k.a. fascia), you will bring more hydration to your cells, decongest bulkiness within your fascia, and aid in detoxification. Rebounding then helps mobilize the toxins, flushing them out through our sweat. Outside of helping our bodies further detox, rebounding is known to aid in digestion, metabolism, and fat burning.
  5. Activated Charcoal. By taking activated charcoal tablets made from coconut shells, you can further detox your body. AC traps toxins and chemicals within your body and acts as a carrier during elimination. It can also be taken when sick with a stomach bug or food poisoning. We love the option of drinking cold-pressed juices containing AC from local vendors like Veggies Juices or Main Squeeze. Be sure when taking AC, you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to flush out all toxins.
  6. Herbal Detox Teas. Not quite ready to take Activated Charcoal, but still want to get some additional detoxing in? We love sipping on detox teas like Tulsi herbal tea. By battling inflammation and supporting our liver’s natural healthy function, herbal detoxing teas are a great option to incorporate into your daily nighttime routines.
  7. Take Magnesium. Whether you want to soak in a magnesium salt bath or orally take a magnesium supplement, by taking magnesium your body will receive many benefits including better sleep, regulated blood pressure, and relieving constipation. Magnesium baths help draw toxins out of your pores while relieving stress and promoting restful sleep. Rather drink your magnesium? Jessica loves mixing Natural Vitality Natural Calm in a glass of water every night to drink before bed.

Whether you want to implement one or all, helping your body by supporting the natural detoxifying process will result in amazing health benefits. Have questions? Please feel free to comment below or email hello@vesselpilates.com!
